Govt mulling to expand capacity of KNPP

The government is considering expanding the generation capacity of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant from 2,000 MW to 6,000 MW, according to the Atomic Energy Ministry. This was informed by the Minister of State in the Department of Space and Department of Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh to the Loksabha. At present, Units 1 and 2 each with a capacity of 1,000 MW are operational. It will increase gradually to 6,000 MW on completion of KKNPP-3 & 4 (2 X 1000 MW) and KKNPP-5 & 6 (2 X 1000 MW) which are presently under different stages of construction.
