Defence Ministry to fast-track USD 12 billion combat vehicle project
To move project under Make II category
The Defence Ministry plans to fast-track the USD 12 billion Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) programme of the Indian Army in order to set in motion the long-pending project. The ministry decided to move the FICV project under ‘Make II’ category (Defence Procurement Procedure-2016). Under this category, the industry is free to make investment in the identified programmes, eliminating delays on account of the Defence Ministry for approvals up to ‘prototype stage’, or the stage in which the main design is made. This will also lead to savings worth USD 500 million to the Defence Ministry. The Indian Army is likely to purchase about 2,300 units of combat vehicles.
