Sharp drop in new investment announcements in FY18

Projects dropped at an all time high

According to CMIE’s CapEx database, fiscal 2017-18 witnessed announcement of 2,496 new projects with investments worth Rs.6.6 trillion. These were lower by 52 per cent in value terms when compared with 3,963 projects with investments worth Rs.13.8 trillion announced in 2016-17. Projects worth Rs.1.9 trillion were announced in March 2018 quarter.

Commissioning of new capacities in 2017-18 declined by 42 per cent. 1,522 projects with investments worth Rs.3.69 trillion were commissioned. Projects worth 739 billion were commissioned in the quarter ended March 2018. Shelving, stalling and abandoning of projects were at an all time high during fiscal 2017-18. Investments worth Rs.7.6 trillion were scrapped. Of these, investments worth Rs.3.3 trillion were dropped in March 2018 quarter.
